Botox for Migraine Overview
Botox, derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, is a nerve toxin renowned for its muscle-paralysing properties. Initially recognised for its effectiveness in cosmetic procedures, it was later discovered to benefit individuals suffering from migraines, resulting in reduced headache frequency.
The mechanism behind its efficacy is believed to involve the blocking of neurotransmitters responsible for transmitting pain signals within the brain. This versatile toxin is also utilised in the treatment of various health conditions, including cerebral palsy, bladder pain, lower back pain, neuropathic pain, and stroke.

Introducing nSTRIDE® APS, a breakthrough treatment for knee joint inflammation. This innovative therapy involves a precisely formulated injection of concentrated beneficial proteins derived from your own blood directly into the affected knee joint. By harnessing the body’s natural healing mechanisms, nSTRIDE® APS aims to not only alleviate pain but also restore equilibrium to your inflamed knee.
How long do the benefits of treatment last?
Clinical research has showcased the efficacy of a single injection, indicating that its benefits may persist for 24-36 months. Additionally, more recent data suggests that certain individuals may experience pain relief for as long as five years following the treatment. cartilage, bone, tendons, and ligaments.
Is nSTRIDE® APS right for me?
If you’re experiencing early or moderate-stage osteoarthritis and have found no relief with other conservative treatments, nSTRIDE® APS could be a suitable option for you. Please give us a call and we can book you in for initial assessment to ascertain the most suitable and beneficial treatment.
What is the recovery time ?
Following nSTRIDE® APS treatment, patients may encounter localised pain and swelling at the injection site, typically resolving within 24-48 hours. There are no enduring side effects associated with the procedure; however, it’s advisable to have someone accompany you on the day of treatment.
Within 4-5 days post-treatment, a slight reduction in swelling, stiffness, and pain can be anticipated. While some individuals may experience diminished knee discomfort within 1-2 weeks, most patients typically notice pain relief between 4-8 weeks following the procedure. Significant pain reduction may take up to 12 weeks to manifest.
For optimal recovery, it’s recommended to limit activity levels for 14 days post-treatment.

Long-Lasting Relief: Botox injections for migraines typically provide relief that lasts for several months
Non-Invasive Treatment Option: Botox injections offer a non-invasive approach to migraine management, making them suitable for individuals who prefer to avoid more invasive procedures or who have not responded well to other treatments. Additionally, Botox injections are generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects.
HOW DO BOTULINUM TOXIN INJECTABLES ALLEVIATE MIGRAINES?
Research is ongoing to find out the mechanism behind the effectiveness of botulinum toxin-based medications in relieving headache associated pain. Evidence indicates that these drugs disrupt the pathway through which pain signals travel between the brain (central nervous system) and the nerves extending from the spinal cord.
During a migraine episode, the body releases neurotransmitters and pain-associated chemicals. Botulinum toxin disrupts the transmission of these substances, particularly at the junctions where nerves and muscles connect. It is believed that when injected into the muscles surrounding the face, head, and neck, the toxin is absorbed by the nerves, interfering with the transmission of pain signals.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO AFTER THE PROCEDURE?
After the procedure, we highly recommend that you remain in the clinic for at least 30 minutes for observation and to ensure there are no immediate complications. Following this observation period, we typically advise refraining from engaging in strenuous physical activities for several days to allow your body to recover optimally. It’s essential to prioritize hydration by drinking plenty of water to help flush out any toxins and aid in the healing process. If you experience any discomfort or pain, Paracetamol can be safely used for pain management as needed.
POST-TREATMENT CARE
While you are capable of returning home independently, some individuals may opt to have someone accompany them, particularly during their initial visit. While it’s advisable to take the remainder of the day off, additional time off following the procedure is not mandatory.
To prevent infection and ensure complete absorption of the injected drug, it is recommended to avoid the following activities during the initial 24 hours:
- Intense exercise (e.g., gym workouts, jogging)
- Hair washing (consider washing your hair the day before your appointment)
- Cleansing the skin in areas where injections were administered
- Massages and exposure to extreme heat, such as spas
You may experience bruising or tenderness in the injected areas for a few days, and it’s possible that your migraine symptoms may temporarily worsen or you may experience a migraine attack in the days following the treatment. During this period, you can use your usual acute treatment (e.g., painkillers, triptans) as needed. The benefits of the treatment typically manifest within one to two weeks after the injections.
Since Botox is administered in two separate treatments, spaced three months apart, the full effect may only be experienced after the second set of injections. Therefore, lack of immediate effect after the first treatment does not necessarily indicate that the treatment is ineffective. Remember to maintain a daily headache diary and bring it to your next clinic appointment.

Both my dogs and I say “thank you”.
